SOUTHERLY INDEX VOLUME ONE 1939–1961

Volume 1 covers the years from 1939 to 1961 when R. G. Howarth, the founding editor, was the predominant figure. He established an apolitical, non-ideological approach where the focus was firmly on literature itself. The three main ingredients, then as now, were critical articles and essays, considered reviews of new books, and verse and short fiction by both established and new writers. After Howarth left Sydney in 1955, his friend Kenneth Slessor took over as editor un til 1961. Because Slessor made few changes to the content and policy established by Howarth, and retained the same format, 1961 is a convenient point to end volume 1.

SOUTHERLY INDEX VOLUME TWO 1962–1990

Volume 2 covers the years from 1962 when G. A. Wilkes was appointed editor. Wilkes edited the journal until 1987 followed by Elizabeth Webby. During this period, the journal appeared in a new, smaller format. Under Wilkes and Webby, Southerly has won a well-merited reputation for rigorous literary criticism, illuminating profiles of and interviews with leading writers, and the judicious and adventurous publication of contemporary verse and short fiction.
