A Lasting Conversation. Stories on Ageing is a collection of short stories about growing old in Australia edited by geriatrician Dr Susan Ogle and writer/social worker Melanie Joosten. It includes the work of some of Australia’s best story tellers, Jon Bauer, Tony Birch, Gillian Bouras, Helen Garner, Sonya Hartnett, Kate Grenville, Cate Kennedy, Michael Meehan, Mandy Sayer, Amy Witting and Michelle Wright as well as stories by health care professionals.

This event will take the form of a conversation between the editors
Dr Susan Ogle, Melanie Joosten and writer/academic Tony Birch.

Dr SUSAN OGLE is a geriatrician at Royal North Shore Hospital and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Sydney Medical School. She has a Masters of Medical Humanities and is editor of ‘Reflection’ in the Australasian Journal on Ageing. Her poetry and stories have been published in medical and literary journals. Falling and Flying — Poems on Ageing edited by Judith Beveridge and Susan Ogle was published by Brandl & Schlesinger in 2015.

MELANIE JOOSTEN is a writer and works as a policy officer in the area of ageing and elder abuse in Melbourne. She is the author of the novels Berlin Syndrome (2011) and Gravity Well (2017) and has been named a Sydney Morning Herald Best Young Novelist. She is the author of the non-fiction collection A Long Time Coming: Essays on Old Age (2016) which won the Australasian Journal on Ageing Book of the Year Award in 2017.

TONY BIRCH an Indigenous Australian author, academic and activist is the inaugural Bruce McGuinness Research Fellow within the Moondani Balluk Centre at Victoria University, Melbourne. He is the author of many short story collections, novels and non-fiction. His work has won many Australian literary awards, including the Patrick White Award in 2017.
